NSD students participating in a music exchange program

A Northland School Division (NSD) music program has opened a door to an exciting opportunity for Mistassiniy School students. Some Mistassiniy students are involved in a music exchange program with a school located in Brandon, Manitoba. From November 30th to December 5th, students from Vincent Massey High School (Brandon School Division) came to visit Wabasca-Desmarais.
The Mistassiniy and Vincent Massey students performed concerts at Mistassiniy School, St. Theresa School and Oski Pasikoniwew Kamik (Bigstone Cree Nation Community School).
In addition to performing, Vincent Massey students were taken on a community tour. The students from Brandon learned how to make a leather pouch with deer hide and beads, cook bannock and enjoy some moose for lunch. They listened to an Elder tell stories, played a traditional drum, hand games, and participated in a round dance.
“When we parted ways, there were a few tears shed but students are looking forward to the second half of our exchange in Brandon this coming April,” said Boyd Davies, Northland School Division Music Specialist.
A student band exchange like this is a large undertaking and requires dedication from students, staff, families, and assistance from community and education partners. Northland School Division would like to thank Experiences Canada, Nova Inn, Eagle Rock Contractors LTD., and the Municipal District of Opportunity for supporting the student band exchange.
