Atikameg School Students Learn about Traditional Medicinal Plants
Posted on October 7
Atikameg School students travelled to East Prairie Métis Settlement on September 23rd to learn about traditional medicinal plants, specifically Wutchuskwa Meetchsoon (Rat Root). They spent the afternoon in the bush learning where to find it, how to identify it, the protocols involved in picking it (tobacco offering), picking it, how to prepare it and its medicinal uses. The group picked a fair amount and planned on taking it back to Atikameg to dry it and give some to elders in the community. The students had a great time and were very engaged and interested in the experiential learning activity. Six high school students took part as well as the Cree instructor, Rhoda Laboucan. Atikameg School is one of three Kee Tas Kee Now Tribal Council (KTC) schools involved in the KTC-NSD Partnership Agreement.
