The Superintendent’s Youth Council held its first meeting on Tuesday, December 3, 2024, offering students a platform to share ideas, provide feedback, and shape decisions that impact their education. Announced in November, the council was created to amplify student voices and strengthen student participation in Northland School Division. During the meeting, students shared their thoughts and ideas on several topics:

  • Top Two Norms: The council agreed that respect and active participation are key to having productive meetings.
  • Making School More Engaging: Students suggested incorporating more hands-on activities, such as taking math lessons outdoors, to make learning more engaging.
  • Improving Programs: Ideas to enhance school programs included introducing workshops on traditional skills like beading to connect students to cultural practices.
  • Field Trip Research: Students explored field trip ideas, highlighting destinations like Jasper, Drumheller, Métis Crossing, and Edmonton. They also discussed transportation, places to stay, and activities that combine fun and learning.

Superintendent of Schools/CEO Cal Johnson praised the council for their contributions and highlighted how the initiative connects to Northland School Division's broader priorities.

“I want to thank the students for their enthusiasm and ideas during the meeting. Their voices are essential to shaping the future of education in Northland School Division,” said Cal Johnson, Superintendent of Schools/CEO. “The formation of the Superintendent’s Youth Council is part of our strategy under Priority 1 – Connections Supporting Reconciliation, as outlined in Northland School Division’s Education Plan. This council ensures students have a platform to share their perspectives and help create meaningful change.”

The day also included movement break activities such as snatch and cornhole, which helped keep everyone focused and energized.
