Northland School Division (NSD) is pleased to announce the appointment of Skye Ell as the Vice-Principal of Calling Lake School.
Skye began her teaching career at Susa Creek School before taking on roles at Calling Lake School and Northland Online School, where she focused on high school humanities. This year, she has been teaching grades 7-12 humanities at Calling Lake School.
“Skye understands the context and our overarching goals at Northland School Division,” said Cal Johnson, Superintendent of Schools/CEO. “I am confident that Skye is ready for this important leadership opportunity. I believe she will do an excellent job of supporting the principal and providing strong leadership for the school.”
Beyond the classroom, Skye has demonstrated strong leadership skills. In 2023, she was elected as the Diversity, Equity, and Human Rights (DEHR) Chair for the Alberta Teachers’ Association (ATA) Local No. 69. She also co-founded the Calling Lake Adult Support Centre with Sandra Houle, a community resource providing job-seeking and government-filing support to residents. This year, Skye has been instrumental in creating and leading professional learning on Hāpara for Northland School Division. Prior to her teaching career, Skye worked as an Event Manager for Marriott Hotels, where she honed leadership skills under Stephen Covey and developed a deep appreciation for emotional intelligence.
“Calling Lake holds a special place in my heart, and I am so happy that I am able to continue growing professionally in this beautiful community,” said Ell. “I look forward to continuing to build connections with the community of Calling Lake and collaborating with and supporting the students and staff in my new role.”
Skye earned her undergraduate degree in Secondary Social Studies and History in 2021 at the University of Calgary (U of C). She is currently pursuing a Master of Interdisciplinary Studies at the U of C, focusing on decolonizing education (year 1) and school leadership (year 2), which she expects to complete in 2026.
Outside of work, Skye enjoys taking care of her plants, spending time with loved ones, practicing yoga, cooking, and watching documentaries.
