Student Use of Personal Mobile Devices in Schools

Posted on August 29

Dear Parents and Guardians,

We are writing to inform you about a new administrative procedure (AP), AP 145-1: Student Use of Personal Mobile Devices in Schools, that outlines how students can use personal mobile devices during school hours. This AP follows the Minister of Education’s announcement and aims to help students stay focused and support a positive learning environment. A personal mobile device is considered to be any personal electronic device that can be used to communicate with or access the internet, such as a cellphone, tablet, laptop, or smartwatch.

Rules and Expectations
To maintain a focused and productive classroom, Northland students are asked to:

  • Turn off and store personal mobile devices during class in a backpack, locker, or other designated areas.
  • Use devices only in designated areas during breaks, lunch, before, and after school, unless permitted by a teacher for a class activity or in an emergency.
  • Follow specific rules if they have an Individual Program Plan that allows device use.

Consequences for Breaking the Rules
If a student does not follow these rules:

  • First Time: Verbal warning; device will be confiscated and returned at the end of the day or to a parent/guardian upon request.
  • Second Time: Written warning; device will only be returned to a parent or guardian.
  • Repeated Offences: Further actions may be taken, including a meeting with parents.

Why These Rules Are Important
These rules are designed to:

  • Reduce distractions and support a focused learning environment.
  • Encourage respectful behavior between students and teachers.
  • Support student well-being by minimizing distractions and opportunities for online bullying.
  • Promote responsible use of technology.

Please review AP 145-1 with your child to ensure they understand the expectations. If you have any questions, please contact your school.

Thank you for your support in keeping Northland schools a safe place to learn and thrive.

Sincerely,

Cal Johnson
