Letter to Families about Funding to Support the New Education Plan
Posted on May 29
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Recently, a media release from the Alberta Teachers’ Association on May 22, 2024, highlighted funding cuts affecting 13 school boards across Alberta. According to the release, Northland School Division (NSD) received a funding decrease of 2.3 percent.
We are fully aware of the funding cuts reported. Northland School Division has conducted an internal review and submitted additional information to Alberta Education to potentially adjust the 2024-2025 funding. This proactive approach aims to offset the decrease currently reported.
Importantly, we want to emphasize that there will be no reduction in the number of teachers, support staff, or access to services. The Board of Trustees has approved the 2024-2025 Spring Budget, aligned with the 2024-2027 Education Plan, ensuring that we continue to provide the necessary resources for Northland students. This plan is a direct response to the feedback we have received from communities, reflecting Northland School Division’s commitment to support and enhance the educational experience of every student.
Due to responsible fiscal management, we will be hiring additional staff to ensure all Northland School Division students thrive. We are also maintaining essential programs such as the School Food Services Hot Lunch Program and ensuring school bus transportation is available for all students. Northland School Division is looking forward to the 2024-2025 school year and implementing strategies from the new education plan to enhance student support and educational outcomes.
Thank you for your continued support and understanding. Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact your school’s administration.
Sincerely,
Cal Johnson
Superintendent of Schools/CEO
