Kindergarten to grade 2 (K-2) teachers participated in professional development (PD) focused on literacy at the Northern Lakes College Campus in Wabasca-Desmarais on August 30th and 31st. They explored the resource Get to School from Handwriting without Tears. The resource helps children develop physical and social skills as well as language and number skills https://www.hwtears.com/gss.
In addition, they developed a better understanding about the Daily 5 resource https://www.thedailycafe.com/daily-5. For example, teachers focused on the word work technique which encourages students to experiment with spelling patterns, memorize high frequency words and develop interest in new and unique words. The PD also provided support to our educators on assessing students by reviewing the Café resource https://www.thedailycafe.com/cafe and PM Benchmarks http://www.nelson.com/pmbenchmark/about.html. The PD is an example how we are supporting teachers through the division’s Literacy Initiative http://nsd61.ca/programs/literacy-initiative.
