Northland School Division No.61 (NSD) is pleased to announce a $50,000 donation by Cenovus Energy Inc. for the 2018-2019 school year. The donation illustrates a continued commitment to support NSD’s Literacy Initiative. Cenovus is providing $20,000 for the summer reading program, $20,000 for professional learning and $10,000 for other projects geared towards enhancing literacy programming.
“Cenovus continues to be instrumental in helping us deliver professional learning for our educators and operating a summer reading program,” said Gord Atkinson, Superintendent of Schools. “Their support is helping us achieve our goal to increase the number of students reading at grade level by 10%.”
“On behalf of the Board of Trustees, we thank Cenovus Energy for supporting the division’s focus on literacy,” said Maddy Daniels, Board Chair. “From the moment a child is born, his or her literacy journey begins. When children begin attending an NSD school, it’s our job to create a welcoming, caring, respectful and safe learning environment for them to develop critical foundational skills like reading and writing. Support from Cenovus puts NSD in a better position to help students succeed.”
“As a longtime supporter of schools in our local communities, we’re pleased to make this significant donation to Northland School Division No. 61,” said Leanne Courchesne, Cenovus Group Lead, Community Investment. “Increasing children’s literacy rates is part of our community investment focus area ‘Giving youth a chance.’ The work that NSD is doing with the Literacy Initiative will help improve student engagement and as a result increase graduation rates across the Division in the short and long term.”
Cenovus Energy Inc. has been supporting NSD’s focus on literacy since 2014.
