Family Literacy Day at Northland Schools

Schools across Northland School Division will celebrate Family Literacy Day on Tuesday, January 27, 2015. Family Literacy Day is a national awareness initiative created by ABC Life Literacy Canada in 1999 and held annually on January 27th to raise awareness of the importance of reading and engaging in other literacy-related activities as a family.

Please review the following events taking place at our schools!

Anzac Community School: Anzac Community School is hosting a “Literacy Across Canada” theme Family Literacy Day this year! Kindergarten to grade 3 students are going to partake in literacy stations throughout the school based on a Canadian authors. At each 15 minute station, groups of students will be read a book written by a Canadian author and will then complete an activity that relates to the story. Grade 4-6 students from Bill Woodward School are taking a leadership role by leading a few of the stations by reading to the groups of students and preparing the activities. The school is also working hard to bring in a special guest!

Calling Lake School: The Disney film Frozen will be this year’s theme for Family Literacy Day at Calling Lake School. The teachers will have different centres set up for students with a focus on reading and writing!

Conklin Community School: The Conklin Kids Do Care Club and grade 4/5/6 students are hosting a Family Literacy event in appreciation of the Conklin Community School library. Students, parents and community members are encouraged to dress up in pajamas and participate in activities such as building reading nests and nooks, snuggling with stories, tumbling with tales on Chrome Books, listening to light-hearted storytellers, sipping succulent hot chocolate, munching on marvelous cookies and charading with authors. Lunch will be provided and there will be book give-aways! 

Dr. Mary Jackson School (Keg River): Dr. Mary Jackson School invites parents to read with their children on Family Literacy Day. Literacy games will be set up in the afternoon! 

Father R. Perin School (Janvier): Father R. Perin School invites parents to join them for a Family Literacy Day event between 10:00AM-12:00PM. Students and parents will be encouraged to bring their books and dress up as their favourite storybook character! There is also a chance to win prizes!

Grouard Northland School: Grouard Northland School is hosting a Literacy night starting at 6PM! Come on over to the school with your children to enjoy some fun family activities and read "Love You Forever"!

Hillview School (East Prairie): Hillview School is hosting Family Literacy Day activities at 1:00PM. There will be a variety of stations for students and families to participate in. 

Kateri School (Trout Lake): Kateri School is hosting a Family Literacy Day celebration that includes book/game giveaways and activities like DEAR (Drop Everything and Read). 

Little Buffalo School: Little Buffalo School is hosting their Family Literacy Day event on Wednesday, January 28th. The event will feature various activities and prizes at the school!

Mistassiniy School (Wabasca-Desmarais): Mistassiniy School is hosting an open house for Family Literacy Day! The event will feature traditional literacy and digital literacy practices during the afternoon.

Paddle Prairie School: Paddle Prairie School is hosting a Scholastic Book Fair and inviting the community librarian to organize reading activities with ECS to grade 6 students. Grade 4-6 students will perform a puppet theater production and a group of grade 6 students will read to children at the Brighter Future Society. 

St. Theresa School (Wabasca-Desmarais): St. Theresa School is holding a Family Literacy Night with over 15 different activities from 6:30PM-8:00PM. There will be prizes and a canteen.
