Northland School Division is pleased to announce the appointment of Nicola Christensen as Acting Principal of J.F. Dion School for the remainder of the 2024-2025 school year.
Nicola brings a wealth of experience and a deep connection to J.F. Dion School and the Fishing Lake Métis Settlement. Her journey with the school began in 1992, where she worked as an Educational Assistant for eight years before transitioning into a teaching role. Nicola taught Kindergarten for another eight years while pursuing her education through the Aboriginal Teacher Education Program (ATEP) at the University of Alberta, graduating with a major in Native Studies. Over the years, she has taught various grades and currently teaches Grade 5/6 while taking on the responsibilities of Acting Principal.
“Nicola understands the context and our overarching goals at Northland School Division,” said Cal Johnson, Superintendent of Schools/CEO. “I am confident that she is ready for this important leadership opportunity. Her long-standing dedication to J.F. Dion School and her passion for education make her a natural fit for this role.”
Nicola draws inspiration from her mother, who was also a teacher and principal, instilling a love for education and leadership early in her life. She credits her mother-in-law for sparking her fascination with Métis culture and traditions, a passion that continues to guide her work and personal life. Married since 1990, Nicola is proud of her three daughters, two of whom are dental hygienists and one who is a teacher in Calgary.
Beyond the classroom, Nicola finds joy in planning student field trips, organizing sporting events, and supporting engaging classroom projects. Outside of school, she enjoys traveling, walking her two dogs, and exploring a wide range of music.
