Building Connections: Northland School Division’s New Superintendent's Elder and Knowledge Keeper Advisory Council
Posted on November 6
As part of Northland School Division’s ongoing commitment to bring the community and classroom closer together, we are excited to announce the formation of the Superintendent's Elder and Knowledge Keeper Advisory Council. This council will be a meaningful way for Northland schools to connect with the communities we serve, weaving First Nations and Métis culture, language, and perspectives into the student learning experience. Elders and Knowledge Keepers will play an important role in helping students, staff, and communities on their paths toward truth, reconciliation, and educational success.
How You Can Help
To establish this council, we have reached out to local First Nations and Métis organizations to assist with nominating Elders and Knowledge Keepers. If you know an Elder or Knowledge Keeper who may be interested, please reach out to your local First Nations or Métis organization.
Looking Ahead
Once nominations are confirmed, Superintendent Cal Johnson and Director of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Education, Debbie Mineault, will host a Zoom session on Tuesday, November 19, 2024. The time of the virtual meeting will be confirmed with attendees. This session will introduce Elders and Knowledge Keepers to their roles on the council. Principals will be in touch with the nominees to confirm attendance at the school for the Zoom session, where lunch will be provided.
Following the Zoom meeting, the first in-person council meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, December 4, 2024, at the DoubleTree West Edmonton.
If you have any questions about the Superintendent's Elder and Knowledge Keeper Advisory Council, please contact your school principal.
